Spotlight on ALS Guardian Angels

ALS Guardian Angels Foundation

Next in our series of posts about Charitocracy nominees, we have ALS Guardian Angels nominated by donor Maggie.

Most ALS related organizations are dedicated to finding a cure. Until then, ALS patients need help living. The ALS Guardian Angels Foundation is dedicated to helping patients and their families live with ALS while maintaining the best quality of life possible.

A cure is not on the horizon. Someone has to help. Who will it be if not us?

Spotlight on Strawberry Mansion Learning Center

Strawberry Mansion Learning Center

Next in our series of posts about Charitocracy nominees, we have Strawberry Mansion Learning Center nominated by donor 4Good.

Kevin Upshur started the nonprofit in 2008 when he transformed the corner building he inherited from his mother—formerly a bar for 40 years—into a neighborhood education and resource center. What was once a dingy taproom—a drain on the community’s vitality and near-empty pockets—now serves up support, mentorship and a different kind of spirit.

The corner brick building, peeling with manila paint, is an afterschool safe-haven for kids who might otherwise go home to an empty house or neglectful parents—which, inevitably, often leads to street mischief and juvenile crime. The center is much more than a place to do homework: it is a harbor light for young minds adrift in a community lackluster in motivation and positivity.

Next in our series of posts about Charitocracy nominees, we have Planned Parenthood nominated by donor Bethany.

In October 2016, Planned Parenthood turned 100 years strong. Planned Parenthood was founded on the revolutionary idea that women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams — no ceilings, no limits.

Today, Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide.

May Day, May Day!

April Showers Bring Mayflowers
painting by Donald Swan

I have been all-consumed by my day job. This is always a rough time of year here, but this year more than ever. Instead of working the 75-80% I signed up for in October, I’m at about 250%. (Ask Jessica, I do not exaggerate.)

While this is slowing down new features at Charitocracy, it isn’t impacting the day-to-day operations. I automated almost everything, and I’m delighted to see it chugging along without my intervention. Not as delighted as I’d be if I could get in there and tinker every week, but still proud of the great causes you’re all nominating and voting for in my “absence.”

Tonight we’ll choose another winning cause, and it’s a hot contest! So if you haven’t voted yet, or you’d like to change your vote last minute, go nuts! Tomorrow will be a new month, and as always we’re excited to see which new causes you’ll surface.

Don’t worry, I’ll eventually be back with a vengeance.

The mission of this foundation is to help families of children with medically complex epilepsy create and preserve memories that will last far beyond a lifetime. To help siblings spend time with each other and just be kids, for parents to reconnect and to leave behind the stress and pressure that everyday life brings when caring for a child with disabilities and complex medical needs. This foundation will strive to provide these families who face financial difficulty with a one-week vacation in order to preserve their family tradition or to start a new tradition.
